Keep Your Car or Buy a New One?

What makes more financial sense: keeping your current car or buying a new car? When confronted with this decision, most people do not know which option to choose. Before you head to your local car dealership (or scrap yard) take a look at this financial breakdown.

Let’s begin with those of you that are new car advocates. The price of the average automobile in Canada is constantly rising. Thus, you’ll have to fork over a lot of hard-earned money in order to buy a new car, truck, or SUV.

Then again, buying a new car means forgoing expensive repairs, but there’s one more thing to think about: the monthly cost of owning a new car. Owning a car is a lot like making credit card payments. You will have to pay for your car each month, and most of these payments are quite hefty.

In addition to making new car payments, you’ll also have to keep enough money to pay for licensing and registration fees. When you add all of these things together, the result is a fairly expensive car. Now, let’s take a closer look at keeping your existing car on the road.

Most people think about buying a new car when their old car no longer fits their lifestyle. If you need a bigger, or smaller car on occasion, then think about renting a car occasionally. This way, you can have the type of car you need when you need it, but you won’t be stuck paying for a new car.

The other reason why many people get rid of an older car is that car repairs can be expensive. You can easily sink thousands of dollars into an old car, and this can be a costly endeavor. Still, keep this in mind: most car repairs do not equate the monthly amount due when you purchase a new car.

If your car is old, but not yet considered a clunker, it’s really a matter of weighing what will cost you less in the long run. Older cars may need more maintenance, but when that maintenance costs consistently adds up to more than the monthly cost of a new car, it may be time to bite the bullet and buy a new one.

If making car repairs has left your bank account dry, then you may want to think about applying for a car repair loan through a private lender. These loans were made for people that can’t afford the cost of repairs, but can’t live without their vehicle. The loans are easy to obtain (no matter what your credit may look like). Is buying a new car a better idea than keeping your old car? Do the math and decide what is best for your financial situation.

Antiques – What’s In a Word?

Every niche subject has its specific, descriptive words, its recognized terminology.  These are words of international understanding, conveying a clear picture of the object being described.

In the world of antiques this is extremely important, particularly when the object is not able to be seen and handled by the person receiving the descriptive information.

Antiques are a vast subject and each category under the title of “antiques” has its own specific terminology.  Key descriptive terms are used for antique categories such as silver, furniture, ceramics, glass, pictures, textiles, jewelery etc.

Within my subject of antique ceramics, porcelain and pottery, I have noticed a consistent confusion over a particular group of ceramic terms.  These include the terms, “soft paste” and “hard paste” porcelain.

The term “soft paste” is sometimes thought to mean that soft paste porcelain is “softer” than hard paste porcelain, (also known as, true porcelain), however, both of these terms actually refer to the kiln temperature, not the porcelain itself.

It is actually the temperature that the porcelain is fired at; soft paste referring to a “soft fire”, which is usually about 1200°C.  Soft paste is also known as “artificial porcelain”, or, “pate tendre”, when referring to French porcelain.

By contrast, hard paste porcelain is fired with a hard fire, usually about 1450°C. Hard paste, or, true porcelain, derives its name from Chinese porcelain, first produced in that country over 2000 years ago.

True or hard paste porcelain is made by the combination of two integral ingredients, white China clay, or Kaolin and “petuntse” as known in English and derived from the Chinese, “Pai-tun-tzu”.

Technically, petuntse is a natural, fusible rock, which, when worked into a paste, combined with white China clay and fired with a “hard” fire, at 1450°C, results in hard paste porcelain.

Most European, soft paste porcelains belong to the 18th century and in general terms, most European hard paste porcelains belong in the 19th century.  But, as always, there are a few exceptions.

Another term which seems to be confused is the descriptive word for a ceramic figure.  When the human form is depicted in porcelain or pottery, it is described as a “figure”.  I have recently seen such a description with a figure described as a statue.  The term statue is reserved for a life sized figure as found in a large garden or park!

Alternately, when animals are described in porcelain and pottery, they are conventionally described as a “model” i.e., a model of a seated spaniel, a model of an alert greyhound etc

Every specialist subject from the vast range of antiques has its own recognized group of descriptive terms and using the correct terminology simply makes the information being offered clear and easily understood.

All About Cats

When I was a child, I always had a cat. Back then, a cat was replaceable to most people, and if one got run over, killed by the neighbor’s dog, poisoned, or just disappeared, there was always another cat to be found.

Fortunately, attitudes have changed over time. These days many people recognize that animals deserve to be treated more humanely and not as a throw away pet.Certainly, I’ve gotten wiser as I’ve gotten older, and my cats have benefited from that. So I decided to take all the tips, tricks, and advice I learned and “compress” it into a sanity saving resource for anyone battling bad cat behavior.

Unfortunately, one of the side effects of people bringing cats indoors has been a trend toward having them declawed for their owner’s personal comfort. Declawing a cat is not a good or safe or reasonable thing to do!Look down at your hands and imagine having your fingertips, up to the first knuckle, being cut off. This is what it’s like to a cat to be declawed! Please know this:  With a little work, you CAN train your cat to use a scratching post and preserve that beautiful sofa and lace curtains.

Cats are clean animals. They prefer to “do their business” in sand or dirt . . . just about any substance they can paw at and cover their wastes up with. So don’t worry. You’re dealing with an animal that has a natural desire to use some device. In case you don’t realize it,cats prefer a litter box with privacy. Yes, if they were people, they would be the type that would not only close the bathroom door completely, they would probably lock the door as well

Cats meow; that’s the predominate way how cats communicate ,and the type of voice they use lets you know some idea of what they’re trying to tell you. A favorite method of communicating is the cat’s purr, which is unique to the feline species. You may already know that a cat purrs when he’s content. However, if you pay close attention to your cat, you’ll notice that he also purrs when he’s nervous, feeling a little uneasy or even if he’s in great pain.

Does your cat “head-butt” you? That’s the cat’s standard affectionate greeting. Try “head-butting” him back. Seriously.  Not very hard of course. You’ll discover that he really enjoys this. You’ll also soon discover that you’ve got a bond forming with this feline.

Cats are truly one of the most interesting, unique pets you can own. Also, with the proper care, a cat will live a lot longer, healthier, life than you ever thought possible.
But, no matter how good your intentions are, you’re not being fair to your cat if you don’t learn how to care for him properly. It’s really easy to do…

Photogenic History

With DSLR’s (Digital Single Lens Reflex) becoming more and more popular these days, exhilarating photos are almost everywhere we look!  A perfect shot can now be created with these techy cameras sold in the market.  It is no doubt that perfect photographs can now be easily and comfortably created.

But did you know that the first photograph was produced in 1814 using a sliding wooden box camera made by Charles and Vincent Chevalier?  It was something far from the permanent and colorful photos we can come up with these days.  The first photo was a rather flimsy paper that came up with fading photos created by Joseph Nicephore Niepce.

From wooden box cameras, photography was taken into a higher level through 35mm’s.  TLR’s and SLR’s followed through.

The next time you get hold of that great photography gadget, you might want to be a bit  nostalgic as you remember how the first photo was taken by a wooden camera.  Thank God for these DSLR’s and the advancement in photo printing that we don’t need to worry about our photos lacking in life or even tarnishing!

If you are a newbie at planning for that perfect relaxing weekend getaway at a massage spa, here’s some help on the most popular Massage types that most people avail of:

Number 5: SHIATSU

This type of massage originated in Japan and uses localized finger massages on specific acupuncture spots.  Each point is maintained for up to 8 seconds to improve the body’s flow of energy and keep body imbalances at bay.

Number 4: DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

For those who have an inkling for a heavier pressure during massage, Deep Tissue will work best for you!  This targets the deeper muscles and connective tissues and is perfect for longstanding aches and pains.  Expect a normal sore feeling a few days after (medically termed as “Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness).

Number 3: HOT STONE MASSAGE

Hot stones have been utilized for relaxation since Cleopatra’s era!  These basalt rocks have a good heat storing property that makes the entire massage experience pretty much relaxing!  Heat promotes a decrease in perceived pain, that is why.  Pressure of massage using the stones may also vary depending on your preference.

Number 2: AROMATHERAPY MASSAGE

Essential oils that are perfectly aromatic and relaxing are used together with the common massage!  Not only can it target the physical pain, but it also addresses emotional stresses due to the relaxing feel that a good scent can bring.  Essential oils used can be lavender, eucalyptus, and tea tree.

Top Massage Type: SWEDISH MASSAGE

This is by far, the most commonly sought after massage in America (perhaps, even globally).  Varied long and smooth strokes are used to promote proper blood circulation, pain relief, joint mobility and muscle flexibility.  The entire treatment lasts for 40 to 90 minutes and the pressure can always be adjusted according to your preference.

Michelle Obama looked stunning during the Inauguration Ball.  She was elegantly clad in a Jason Wu one-shouldered, white, chiffon gown that went everyone swooning for the frock.

Single-strapped numbers are definitely the trend today!  From Red Carpets to celebrity events, these gorgeous ladies are sporting the fad well!  One-shouldered numbers are perfect for those who have great shoulders to show off!

Whether it’s a knee-length or a long single-strapped dress, I’m ready to give it a try!  And by the way, Victoria’s Secret’s one-shouldered bikin ran out of stocks the first day it went up online!

Second-hand DVD’s

What I love about second-hand DVD’s is that you get to watch the flick at a fraction of the original cost!  Although it may be risky to buy from a totally new seller (or if you are totally new to purchasing second-hand discs), it can be quite a steal to get them from a trusted and reputed one.

These hard times surely call for saving up for the rainy days (which is, I think, everyday!) and bagging pristine copies of your fave flicks at lower prices is a big thing!  Movie marathon is one of the best and cost-efficient ways of bonding with the gang and so a reasonably-priced DVD complements this activity!

Go through a list of sellers and find the highly reputed ones that carry the title you’ve been eyeing on!  Second-hand DVD’s are great for making sure that your hard-earned moolah is well-spent.
